Unspoken

What a handsome man you were

the day you first stepped into our class,

so long ago now

Your knowledge impressed us

and you were eager to share,

yet you kept your stern face

and awoke us with discipline

And we, the high school girls

entranced by your lecture

at the same time

were adrift in our own

romantic fantasies

I always wonder

what would have happened

if one of us had stood up

and said out loud in class

“We adore you”

Would you acknowledge us

or simply continued lecturing

pretending not to hear

And we will never know

what might have happened,

for none of us

could summon the courage

to say those words
